Kuranda, Waterfalls & Wetlands Discovery Day Tour
This full-day Cairns tour visits Cattana Wetlands, Barron Falls (Din Din) with a Djabugay cultural guide, Skybury Coffee Plantation for lunch, Emerald Creek Ice Creamery, and finishes with a ride on the Kuranda Scenic Railway
Spend a full day exploring some of Tropical North Queensland’s most memorable natural and cultural experiences, guided by a knowledgeable local driver guide with Down Under Tours. Wander through ancient wetlands, stand before a spectacular waterfall with deep Aboriginal significance, sample the Tablelands’ famous coffee and produce, and finish the day riding one of Australia’s most iconic heritage railways back through the rainforest.
Cattana Wetlands
Your day begins with a gentle guided walk through a rare remnant patch of feather palm forest, one of the last of its kind in the region. Wander boardwalks and shaded paths past Jabiru Lake, keeping an eye out for water birds, turtles and the occasional resident crocodile, while your guide points out the native plants and wildlife that thrive in this quiet corner of the Tablelands.
Barron Falls (Din Din)
Next, visit Barron Falls, known to the Djabugay people as Din Din, one of the most powerful and significant waterfalls in the region. Here you’ll be welcomed by a Djabugay cultural guide for a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country, sharing stories of the Djabugay Nation’s ancient and ongoing connection to this land before you take in the falls themselves.
Skybury Coffee Plantation
Head up onto the Atherton Tablelands for lunch at Skybury, one of Australia’s pioneering coffee and papaya growers. Tuck into a plantation style lunch featuring produce grown right on the property, then relax with sweeping Tablelands views while sampling locally roasted coffee.
Emerald Creek Ice Creamery
A short drive brings you to Emerald Creek Ice Creamery, a much-loved, locally owned stop where you can sample four different handmade ice-cream flavours, all produced on site.
Kuranda Scenic Railway
Round out your day aboard the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway, winding down from the mountain village of Kuranda to Freshwater Station. Built by hand in the 1890s, the line passes through 15 hand-cut tunnels and over 37 bridges — an extraordinary feat of early engineering, and a beautiful, relaxed way to end your day in the rainforest.
