There’s something about shopping under a rainforest canopy that makes the whole experience feel different. No fluorescent lighting, no chain stores – just local makers, tropical fruit, and the sound of birds competing with the occasional busker. That’s Kuranda markets in a nutshell.
The village has been famous for its markets since the late 1970s, when a group of local artists and craftspeople set up stalls and essentially put Kuranda on the tourist map. Today, there are two distinct markets sitting side by side on Rob Veivers Drive, and they’re still the first thing most visitors head for when they step off the Scenic Railway or Skyrail. Here’s what to expect from each.
The original rainforest markets

The Original Rainforest Markets are where Kuranda’s market tradition started, back in 1978. A group of local artists and alternative lifestylers organised the first stalls and even funded their own train service for two seasons to prove there was enough demand to bring visitors up the mountain. It worked – and the markets have been running ever since.
The atmosphere here still carries that original spirit. It’s relaxed, a bit bohemian, and genuinely creative. Many of the stallholders have been part of the markets for 25 to 30 years, and their local knowledge shows in what they make and sell.
What you’ll find
- Handmade jewellery, leather goods, and pottery
- Hand-painted clothing and textiles
- Local art and woodwork
- Organic skincare and natural products
- A gem and fossil museum
- Rainforest mini golf (tucked away inside the market grounds)
Food and drink
The food stalls are a highlight in their own right. Fresh tropical fruit, smoothies, locally roasted coffee, handmade chocolates, and international street food all compete for your attention. It’s worth budgeting time (and appetite) for a proper wander through the food section rather than grabbing something on the go.
Opening hours
Wednesday to Sunday, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm.
The Kuranda Heritage markets

The Heritage Markets sit right next door on Rob Veivers Drive, and while they share the same rainforest setting, the feel is a bit different. Where the Original Markets lean bohemian and handmade, the Heritage Markets are more polished – a covered, all-weather complex with permanent retail spaces alongside market-style stalls.
The Heritage Markets have been established for over 30 years and are also home to two of Kuranda’s most popular wildlife attractions – Kuranda Koala Gardens and Birdworld Kuranda. The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is just a short walk away on the same street.
What you’ll find
- Local art, opals, and gemstone jewellery
- Souvenirs and gifts made in the region
- Clothing and fashion from local designers
- Organic produce and locally sourced spices
- Cafes and restaurants, including options for a proper sit-down lunch
Opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Heritage markets vs original markets – which should you visit?
Both – they’re right next to each other, and it takes less than a minute to walk between them. But they do attract slightly different crowds and offer a different vibe, so here’s how they compare.
| Original Rainforest markets | Heritage markets | |
| Atmosphere | Bohemian, creative, outdoor rainforest setting | Polished, covered, all-weather complex |
| Best for | Handmade and one-of-a-kind items, artisan food | Souvenirs, gemstones, wildlife attractions, and sit-down dining |
| Stallholders | Many long-term local artists and makers | A mix of retail shops and market stalls |
| Food | Street food stalls, tropical fruit, smoothies | Cafes and restaurants with table service |
| Wildlife | No | Home to Koala Gardens and Birdworld |
| Weather | Partially covered, the rainforest canopy provides shade | Fully covered, all-weather |
| Opening hours | Wed-Sun, 9:30 am – 3:00 pm | Wed-Sun, 10:00 am – 3:30 pm |
If you’re short on time and have to pick one, the Original Markets tend to have more of the handmade, locally crafted items that make for genuinely unique souvenirs. But the Heritage Markets are where you’ll find the wildlife parks and the more established dining options, so most visitors end up doing both.
What to buy at Kuranda markets
Kuranda’s markets are known for products you won’t find in the shops along the Cairns Esplanade. Here are some of the things worth looking out for:
- Handmade jewellery – Local artisans work with opals, gemstones, and tropical materials. Several stallholders will custom-make pieces while you wait.
- Indigenous art – Aboriginal artefacts, dot paintings, and hand-carved items from local artists.
- Leather goods – Handcrafted bags, belts, and wallets made in Kuranda.
- Local honey and produce – Tropical honey, macadamia nuts, locally blended spices, and seasonal fruit from the Atherton Tablelands.
- Woodwork – Turned bowls, carved figures, and decorative pieces made from local timbers.
- Organic skincare – Natural soaps, balms, and skincare products made with local ingredients.
If you find something you love but can’t fit it in your luggage, most stallholders are happy to arrange overseas shipping.
Tips for visiting the Kuranda markets
A few things that will help you get the most out of your visit:
- Arrive when the markets open. The stalls are quieter in the first hour, which means more time to chat with the makers and browse without the crowds. By mid-morning on busy days, the walkways fill up.
- Bring cash as well as cards. Most permanent stalls take card payments, but some of the smaller artisan stalls – particularly in the Original Markets – are cash only.
- Don’t rush the food. Between the tropical fruit stalls, the smoothie bars, the coffee, and the international food vendors, you could easily spend half an hour just eating your way through. That’s not a bad thing.
- Weekdays are noticeably quieter. Both markets are open from Wednesday to Sunday. Wednesdays and Thursdays tend to be the calmest days, with the most elbow room and the shortest wait for food.
- Allow 45 minutes to an hour for both markets combined. That’s a comfortable browse without rushing. If you want to eat, add another 20-30 minutes.
- Check opening days before you visit. Both markets are closed on Monday and Tuesday. If your Kuranda day falls on one of those days, you’ll miss the market experience entirely – worth knowing when you’re booking your tour.
How the markets fit into a Kuranda day trip
Most visitors to Kuranda arrive via the Scenic Railway or Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, and the markets are the natural first stop – they’re a short walk from both the Kuranda train station and the Skyrail terminal.
| Important Information – Skyrail Upgrade 2026: Skyrail will be closed completely from 20th July to 18th August 2026 as part of a major $85 million infrastructure upgrade. Tours will offer coach transfers to/from Kuranda. From 19th August to 26th October 2026, Skyrail will operate a limited Kuranda to Barron Falls loop service only (Wednesdays to Sundays). Mondays and Tuesdays will not operate during this period. Please check availability for your travel dates and get in touch with us and we’ll help find the best option for you. |
A typical day might look like this:
- Arrive in Kuranda mid-morning
- Start with the Original Markets while they’re still quiet
- Walk through to the Heritage Markets
- Visit one or two wildlife attractions (Koala Gardens, Birdworld, or the Butterfly Sanctuary)
- Grab lunch at one of the Heritage Markets cafes or the Original Markets food stalls
- Head to your afternoon return journey
The amount of village time you get depends on your tour. Some Kuranda day tour packages give you 2.5 hours in the village, others up to 4 hours – and the self-drive option lets you stay as long as you like.

Are the Kuranda markets open every day?
No – both the Heritage Markets and the Original Rainforest Markets are open Wednesday to Sunday. They’re closed on Monday and Tuesday. It’s worth checking this before you book your Kuranda day trip.
What time do the Kuranda markets open?
The Original Rainforest Markets open at 9:30 am and close at 3:00 pm. The Heritage Markets open at 10:00 am and close at 3:30 pm. Both operate from Wednesday to Sunday.
What’s the difference between the Heritage Markets and Original Markets?
The Original Markets have a more bohemian, artisan feel with handmade goods and outdoor food stalls. The Heritage Markets are a covered complex with retail shops, gemstone jewellery, cafes, and two wildlife attractions (Koala Gardens and Birdworld). They’re right next to each other, so most visitors browse both.

They’re one of the main reasons people come to Kuranda. The combination of handmade local goods, tropical food, the rainforest setting, and the creative atmosphere makes them unlike any other market in Tropical North Queensland.
Can you visit the markets in the rain?
Yes. The Heritage Markets are fully covered, and the Original Markets are partially sheltered under the rainforest canopy. It’s a good all-weather activity, though a light rain jacket is worth having on hand during the wet season.
How do you get to the Kuranda markets?
Most visitors arrive via the Kuranda Scenic Railway or Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Both terminals are a short walk from the markets. You can also self-drive via the Kuranda Range Road (about 30 minutes from Cairns), with parking available near the village centre.
