Two ways up a mountain, two completely different experiences – and one question that comes up almost every time someone calls Cairns Discovery Tours to plan a Kuranda day trip. Should you take the Scenic Railway or the Skyrail? And does it matter which direction you go?
The short answer is that most visitors do both – one up and one down – and we’d recommend exactly that. But the experience you get from each is genuinely different, and the direction you travel can shape your whole day. Here’s what you need to know to pick the right combination.
The Kuranda scenic railway – a heritage journey through World Heritage-listed rainforest

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is one of Australia’s great heritage train journeys – and the history behind it is half the appeal. Construction began in 1886, and the line to Kuranda was completed in 1891. Workers hand-carved 15 tunnels and built 37 bridges to climb from sea level to 328 metres through some of the most rugged terrain in Tropical North Queensland.
Today, the vintage carriages wind through World Heritage-listed Barron Gorge National Park, passing waterfalls, cliff faces, and dense rainforest. The onboard commentary tells the story of the railway’s construction – the engineering feats, the dangers, and the workers who built it – and it’s surprisingly engaging.
Here’s what to expect:
- Journey time: Around 1 hour 55 minutes from Cairns Central, or 90 minutes from Freshwater Station
- Departures to Kuranda: 8:30 am and 9:30 am from Cairns Central (8:55 am and 9:55 am from Freshwater)
- Return from Kuranda: 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm
- Barron Falls photo stop: The train pauses for about 10 minutes so everyone can step out for photos
- The Kuranda Scenic Railway – Gold Class option
9.30am Train to Kuranda or 3.30pm Train from Kuranda
- Relax and enjoy the dedicated food and beverage service in Gold Class. The handcrafted carriages adorned with Victorian-inspired décor and comfortable individual lounge-style seats make this travel option unique.
Your Gold Class journey includes:
- Morning travellers receive a tropical welcome refreshment served in the pavilion area of Freshwater railway station from 9.35am
- Afternoon travellers, tropical welcome drinks are served onboard the train at Kuranda railway station from 3.10pm
- dedicated attendant service

- Souvenir gift pack and trip fan guide
- onboard audio commentary
- photographic stop at Din Din (Barron Falls)
- locally sourced appetisers and beverages

The Skyrail rainforest cableway – a bird’s-eye view of the canopy
If the Scenic Railway takes you through the rainforest, the Skyrail floats you above it. The cableway spans 7.5 kilometres across the Macalister Range, with six-person gondolas gliding just metres above the treetops. It opened in 1995 and was the longest gondola cableway in the world at the time.
The experience is quieter and more contemplative than the train. You rise above the canopy and see the scale of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area stretching out below – rivers threading through dense green, the Coral Sea glinting in the distance, and Barron Gorge carving through the ranges.
What makes Skyrail special is the two mid-stations where you can hop off and explore:
- Red Peak station – The highest point of the cableway at 545 metres above sea level, with a boardwalk loop through the rainforest and free ranger-guided tours on the ecology of the forest floor
- Barron Falls station – Home to The Edge Lookout, with panoramic views across Barron Gorge and the falls themselves (spectacular after wet season rains, more of a trickle in the dry)
The practical details:
- Journey time: Approximately 90 minutes one way, including time at both mid-stations
- Departures: Gondolas leave continuously in 15-minute intervals. First departure from Smithfield is 8:30 am; last one-way departure from Kuranda is 3:15 pm.
- Gondola capacity: Up to 6 guests in a standard gondola, 5 in Diamond View
- Upgrade option: Diamond View gondolas have a glass floor panel, so you’re looking straight down through the canopy, with dedicated boarding queues and departures approximately every 7 minutes
| Important Information – Skyrail Upgrade 2026: Skyrail will be closed completely from 20th July to 18th August 2026 as part of a major $85 million infrastructure upgrade. Tours will offer coach transfers to/from Kuranda. From 19th August to 26th October 2026, Skyrail will operate a limited Kuranda to Barron Falls loop service only (Wednesdays to Sundays). Mondays and Tuesdays will not operate during this period. Please check availability for your travel dates and get in touch with us and we’ll help find the best option for you. |
Scenic Railway vs Skyrail – how do they compare?
Choosing between these two comes down to what kind of experience you’re after – whether you want to be immersed in the gorge looking up at waterfalls, or floating above the canopy looking down at the world’s oldest tropical rainforest. They cover the same stretch of mountain, but the mood, the pace, and the views couldn’t be more different.
| Kuranda Scenic Railway | Skyrail rainforest cableway | |
| The experience | Heritage rail journey through tunnels, over bridges, past waterfalls | Aerial gondola ride above the rainforest canopy |
| Journey time | ~1 hr 55 min (from Cairns Central) | ~90 min (including mid-station stops) |
| Departures | Set a timetable (2 mornings, 2 afternoons) | Continuous throughout the day |
| Flexibility | Must board at your booked time | Choose your own pace at mid-stations |
| Highlights | Stoney Creek Falls, Barron Falls stop, onboard commentary, heritage carriages | Red Peak boardwalk, The Edge Lookout, canopy views, ranger-guided tours |
| Best views | Waterfalls, gorge close-ups, cliff faces | Panoramic canopy, Coral Sea, Barron Gorge from above |
| Upgrade | Gold Class (refreshments and lounge seating) | Diamond View (glass-floor gondola) |
| Accessibility | Heritage Class is wheelchair accessible with advance notice. No wheelchair access to the Barron Falls platform. | Most standard wheelchairs accommodated. Boardwalks at mid-stations are wheelchair and pram accessible. |
| Best in the wet season | Waterfalls at full force – Stoney Creek Falls is a standout | Mist across the canopy gives the rainforest an almost prehistoric feel |
Should you do one or both?
Honestly? Do both. It’s one of the few times where you genuinely don’t have to choose – and the day is so much better for it.
Taking the Scenic Railway one way and Skyrail the other gives you two completely different perspectives on the same landscape. The train immerses you in the gorge – you hear the waterfalls, feel the cool mist, and roll past rock faces close enough to touch. The Skyrail lifts you above it all and lets you see the sheer scale of the rainforest stretching to the horizon.
Doing the same mode both ways can feel repetitive. Two hours on a train each way is a long day, and taking the gondola twice means missing out on one of Australia’s most celebrated heritage rail journeys. The combination is what makes a Kuranda day trip feel complete.

Option 1: Train up, Skyrail down
This is the more popular combination and works well if you’re staying in central Cairns or near Freshwater.
You board the early morning train, enjoy the commentary and Barron Falls photo stop on the way up, spend a few hours exploring the village, then glide back down via Skyrail at your own pace in the afternoon.
Why it works: The train timetable locks in your morning start, which gives your day structure. The Skyrail runs continuously, so there’s no rush to leave Kuranda at a fixed time. You’ll also get afternoon light on the Skyrail, which can be lovely across the canopy.
Option 2: Skyrail up, train down
This suits visitors staying in the Northern Beaches or near Smithfield, since the Skyrail terminal is just 15 minutes north of Cairns.
You start your day with a calm, scenic gondola ride in the morning, explore the village, and catch the 2:00 pm or 3:30 pm train back down.
Why it works: The Skyrail’s flexible departure times mean you can ease into your morning without racing to a platform. Morning light on the canopy is often clearer before the afternoon haze sets in. And finishing on the Scenic Railway – with the waterfalls, tunnels, and commentary rolling past – gives your day a dramatic ending.
Quick guide: which direction suits you?
If you’re still tossing up which way to go, this quick reference covers the most common scenarios we hear from travellers. Your accommodation, your travel companions, and how you like to start your mornings all play a part.
| Your situation | Recommended direction |
| Staying in central Cairns | Train up, Skyrail down |
| Staying in Northern Beaches or Palm Cove | Skyrail up, train down |
| Travelling with young kids | Skyrail up, train down (flexible start, less rushing) |
| Want a structured start to the day | Train up, Skyrail down |
| Prefer a calm morning and a dramatic finish | Skyrail up, train down |
| Self-driving | Either works – park at Skyrail’s Smithfield terminal, and a transfer bus connects you to Freshwater Station |
What are your Kuranda tour options?
There’s no single “Kuranda tour” – there are actually several different packages depending on how much time you want in the village, what attractions you’d like to include, and whether you need hotel transfers or you’re driving yourself.
Here’s how the main options break down.
Self-drive combo
If you’ve got a car, the self-drive package is the simplest way to do it. You park at Skyrail’s Smithfield terminal, and the package includes the Scenic Railway one way, Skyrail the other, and a transfer bus between terminals. A Gold Class upgrade is available on the 9:30 am train if you want the lounge carriage experience.
Skyrail and scenic train day tours
These are the core combo packages – one-way Skyrail and one-way Scenic Railway with free time in Kuranda Village. Several variations are available depending on what time you’d like to travel and how long you want in the village:
- Early train up, afternoon Skyrail down: Depart on the 8:50 am train, spend around 3 hours in Kuranda, then glide back on the 1:45 pm Skyrail
- Morning Skyrail up, 2:00 pm train down: Board the Skyrail around 9:45 am, giving you roughly 2.5 hours in the village before catching the afternoon train
- Morning Skyrail up, 3:30 pm train down: A more relaxed option with up to 4 hours in Kuranda – plenty of time to wander the markets, grab lunch, and soak up the village atmosphere
- Late morning Skyrail up, 3:30 pm train down: Board around 11:00 am for 3 hours in the village and a leisurely pace all round
Kuranda day tour with hotel transfers
Same Skyrail-and-train combination, but with hotel pickup and drop-off included so you don’t need to worry about getting between terminals. Times vary depending if you want an early start with plenty of time in Kuranda or a later start of 10.20am. Gold Class upgrades are available on these package too.
Gold class experience
For something a bit special, one package pairs the Skyrail with a Gold Class return on the Scenic Railway. The Gold Class carriage features handcrafted Victorian-style decor, lounge seating, and personalised onboard service with refreshments. You get up to four hours in the village before boarding.
Full-day tours with Rainforestation Nature Park

If you want to pack more into your day, the fuller packages add Rainforestation Nature Park to the mix. Depending on the tour, this can include a WWII Army Duck ride through the rainforest, the Koala and Wildlife Park, and the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience.
The main options here are:
- Army Duck Tour with Train and Skyrail – Includes the Army Duck rainforest ride alongside the Scenic Railway and Skyrail combo. A full day from around 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.
- Classic Kuranda Day Tour – The most comprehensive option, combining Scenic Railway, Skyrail, Rainforestation Nature Park (with Army Duck, wildlife park, and Aboriginal experience), plus lunch and hotel transfers.
- Skyrail, Kuranda Village and Rainforestation – Starts with an electric coach to Kuranda, includes Rainforestation with Army Duck and Pamagirri experience, free time in the village, then a return journey on the Skyrail with hotel transfers.
Electric bus option

A newer addition – this package uses a 100% electric bus from your Cairns hotel to Kuranda, includes Rainforestation, and returns on the Scenic Railway. A good pick if low-emission travel matters to you.

Tips for getting the most out of your Kuranda day
A few things we’ve picked up from booking thousands of Kuranda trips over the years:
- Allow 2-3 hours in Kuranda Village. The markets, wildlife parks, cafes, and galleries are worth exploring properly – don’t just rush through to catch your return journey.
- Wet season isn’t a bad thing. After rain, Stoney Creek Falls and Barron Falls run at their most powerful. The Skyrail in misty conditions gives the rainforest an almost Jurassic atmosphere. Pack a light rain jacket and lean into it.
Book early in peak season. July through October is busy, and both the train and Skyrail can sell out – especially Gold Class. Booking ahead locks in your preferred departure.
- Wear comfortable shoes. The boardwalks at Skyrail’s mid-stations and Kuranda Village itself involve a fair bit of walking. Leave the thongs at the hotel.
- Bring a camera with decent zoom. The Barron Falls viewing platform and The Edge Lookout on the Skyrail are some of the best photo spots in Tropical North Queensland – but they’re at a distance, so zoom helps.

Frequently asked questions
Can you do Skyrail and the Scenic Railway in one day?
Yes – and that’s exactly how most people visit Kuranda. You take one mode up and the other down, with a few hours in the village in between. The full day typically runs from around 8:30 am to 4:00-5:30 pm, depending on your tour and direction of travel.
Which side of the train has the best views?
On the way up to Kuranda, the right-hand side gives you the best views toward the coast and valleys. The left-hand side is where you’ll catch the waterfalls – particularly Stoney Creek Falls after rain. On the return, it’s reversed.
Is Skyrail safe in the rain?
Absolutely. The gondolas are fully enclosed, and complimentary umbrellas are provided at the mid-stations. Wet weather actually enhances the experience – mist sitting across the canopy creates an atmosphere you won’t get on a clear day.
Is the Scenic Railway wheelchair accessible?
Heritage Class carriages are wheelchair accessible with advance notice at the time of booking. The Barron Falls viewing platform is accessed by stairs only, so passengers using wheelchairs will need to stay onboard at that stop. Skyrail can accommodate most standard wheelchairs, and the boardwalks at both mid-stations are wheelchair and pram accessible.
How much time should you spend in Kuranda Village?
Two to three hours is the sweet spot. We recommend minimum 2 hour to 4 hours. That gives you time to browse the Heritage and Original Markets, grab lunch, and visit one or two attractions without feeling rushed. If you’re adding Rainforestation Nature Park or another wildlife experience, allow a bit longer.
Do you need to book in advance?
We’d strongly recommend it, especially during peak season (June to October) and for Gold Class upgrades. Booking through Cairns Discovery Tours locks in your preferred departure and takes the transfer logistics off your plate.
Ready to see the rainforest from every angle?
A day trip to Kuranda brings together everything Tropical North Queensland does well – ancient rainforest, dramatic landscapes, and a village that’s genuinely fun to wander around. Whether you take the train up and float back down or start your morning above the canopy, the combination of Scenic Railway and Skyrail is one of those experiences people talk about long after they get home.
