Cairns Airport to city transfer: getting into town fast

Aerial view of Cairns city skyline and marina along the coastline, with mountains in the background.

When landing in Cairns for the first time, it’s easy to assume the airport-to-city transfer is going to be complicated. It isn’t. Cairns Airport (CNS) sits just 7 kilometres north of central Cairns in the suburb of Aeroglen, and in normal traffic, the drive takes 10-15 minutes by any motorised option. Add 5-10 minutes during weekday peak hours (7-9 am and 4-6 pm).

The airport has two terminals – T1 International and T2 Domestic – connected by a covered walkway and a complimentary inter-terminal shuttle. Both terminals have taxi ranks, rideshare pickup zones, shuttle desks, and hire car counters directly in the arrivals hall. There’s no need to figure it out on the run.

Your options at a glance

Every transport option from Cairns Airport takes roughly the same time – the road is the road. What varies is cost, convenience, and how much luggage you’re carrying. If you’re travelling with a family or arriving late at night, a taxi or private transfer removes the guesswork. If you’re on a budget and travelling light, rideshare or a shuttle works well.

Before the details, here’s a quick reference:

OptionApprox. Cost (CBD)Journey TimeBest for
Taxi$25-$3510-15 minGroups, late arrivals, no pre-planning
Rideshare (Uber/DiDi)$18-$2810-15 minSolo travellers, budget-conscious
Airport shuttle$15-$20 pp20-30 minBudget travellers with time to spare
Private transfer$60-$100+10-15 minFamilies, comfort, guaranteed pickup
Hire carFrom ~$40/day10-15 minTravellers exploring beyond Cairns
Public busNot available

Prices are a guide only – transport costs shift with fuel surcharges, provider, and season, so it’s worth checking current rates directly with the operator before you travel.

Taxi

The most straightforward option for most arrivals. Metered taxi ranks sit directly outside both terminals – no booking needed, no app required, taxis are there around the clock.

Approximate cost: $25-$35 from the airport to central Cairns. A $4.00 terminal levy applies for domestic arrivals (T2) and $5 for international arrivals (T1), added to the metered fare.

Good to know: Card payment is accepted on all Cairns taxis, though a small EFTPOS surcharge may apply. If arriving late at night (midnight to 5 am), taxi supply can be thinner than usual – have a backup option ready.

Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available through Cairns Taxis on request.

Rideshare – Uber and DiDi

Both Uber and DiDi operate at Cairns Airport with dedicated pickup zones at each terminal. For domestic arrivals (T2), the rideshare zone is to the right as you exit. For international arrivals (T1), it’s to the left.

The zones are signposted but aren’t always obvious on a first visit – follow the Uber or DiDi signage rather than the taxi rank signs.

Approximate cost: $18-$28 to central Cairns at standard rates. The same terminal levy applies – $2.50 from T2 domestic, $5 from T1 international – automatically added to your fare.

Good to know: Upfront pricing is available before you confirm your ride, which removes the guesswork. For early or late flights, driver availability can be slower – if that’s a concern, pre-book a private transfer instead.

Rideshare is often the cheapest option for a solo traveller and works well for couples too. For families with significant luggage, consider booking an UberXL for additional space.

Airport shuttle

Shuttle services operate between Cairns Airport and central Cairns, as well as to Palm Cove, Port Douglas, and other Northern Beaches destinations.

Approximate cost: Around $26 per adult one-way to central Cairns. Costs increase $37 for Palm Cove and $66 Port Douglas transfers.

Good to know: Shuttles are seat-in-coach services, meaning you’ll share the vehicle with other passengers and may have a few stops along the way before reaching your hotel. This adds 20-40 minutes, depending on how many other passengers are dropping off ahead of you.

It’s the most economical option for solo travellers who aren’t in a rush.

Private transfer

Pre-booked private transfers offer a confirmed pickup with a driver waiting for you at arrivals – useful when you’ve had a long flight, you’re travelling with young children, or you simply want the logistics sorted before you land.

Approximate cost: $60-$100+ for a central Cairns transfer, depending on vehicle size and provider. Costs increase for Port Douglas and Palm Cove.

Good to know: Drivers meet you in the public arrivals area immediately beyond the exit doors. For multi-day trips or larger groups, the per-person cost of a private transfer can be comparable to a taxi or even cheaper.

Several companies operate in Cairns – book through your accommodation or a reputable transfer operator in advance, especially during peak season (June-August).

Hire car

All major hire car companies – Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty, Sixt, and Redspot (operating Enterprise, National and Alamo) – have desks directly in the arrivals halls of both T1 and T2. The hire car parking area is located at the northern end of the car park opposite T2.

Approximate cost: From around $40-$60/day for a standard vehicle, though prices vary significantly based on vehicle type, season, and how far in advance you book. Book early – particularly during peak season – as availability tightens and rates rise.

When a hire car makes sense

If you’re planning to explore beyond the city – the Northern Beaches, Atherton Tablelands, Daintree, or Port Douglas – collecting a hire car at the airport is one of the most convenient things you can do. You can head straight from arrivals to wherever you’re going without stopping in the city first.

Good to know: Standard 2WD vehicles handle most Cairns day trips comfortably in the dry season. If you’re planning to self-drive the Bloomfield Track to Cooktown or venture off sealed roads in the wet season, a 4WD is essential.

International drivers will need a valid licence from their home country. Some nationalities may also need an International Driving Permit – check before travel.

Public bus – what you need to know

The question comes up a lot, so here’s a direct answer: there is no public bus stop at Cairns Airport terminal.

The nearest TransLink stop is on Captain Cook Highway, which requires a walk of 10-15 minutes from the terminal – NOT RECOMMENDED for safety reasons as there is no footpath

Public buses are excellent for getting around Cairns city and reaching the Northern Beaches (Route 110 to Palm Cove is very useful), but they are not a practical option for airport arrivals. Don’t plan around it.

Getting to destinations beyond the city

If you’re not heading to central Cairns but continuing straight to a Northern Beaches resort, Port Douglas, or Palm Cove, your options differ slightly:

Palm Cove (25 kilometres north): About 25 minutes from the airport. Uber starts from around $31. Shuttle services also operate this route. A hire car collected at the airport is the most flexible option if you’re planning beach-hopping.

Port Douglas (68 kilometres north): About 60-70 minutes from the airport along the Captain Cook Highway. Pre-booked shuttle transfers run this route – expect around $66+ per person one-way. Taxi from the airport starts from around $200+. Uber is also available. A hire car gives you the freedom to stop along the way, and the drive itself is genuinely spectacular.

Heading straight to a tour pickup: Most Great Barrier Reef tours and Daintree Rainforest tours include hotel pickup from central Cairns and Northern Beaches accommodation – the 1 Day Daintree – Cape Tribulation Rainforest Tour, for example, collects guests directly from their accommodation. If you’re staying in the city, transfers are built into your day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a public bus from Cairns Airport to the city?

No. The nearest TransLink bus stop requires a walk from the terminal and isn’t a practical option for most arrivals with luggage. Taxi, rideshare, shuttle, or hire car are the realistic choices.

How long does it take to get from Cairns Airport to the city?

Around 10-15 minutes in normal traffic. Allow an extra 5-10 minutes during weekday peak hours (7-9 am and 4-6 pm).

What’s the cheapest way from Cairns Airport to central Cairns?

Rideshare (Uber or DiDi) is typically the cheapest option for a solo traveller, starting from around $18-$28. Airport shuttles are comparable and slightly cheaper for single travellers, but slower due to multiple drop-offs.

Can I get from Cairns Airport to Port Douglas directly?

Yes – pre-booked shuttle transfers and hire cars both service this route. The drive is about 60-70 minutes and takes in one of Australia’s most scenic coastal highways.

Do I need to pre-book a taxi?

No. Metered taxis queue at both terminals 24/7 and don’t need pre-booking.

Do hire car desks have cars available without a pre-booking?

Sometimes, but during peak season (June-August), vehicle availability at the airport can be limited and walk-up rates are higher. Book in advance.

We had such a fun time on a half day tour of Fitzroy island with Cairns Discovery Tours! We managed to do an everything we wanted (Nudey beach, long snorkel and lunch) within the time period we had and we even got to swim with turtles 🐢 an unforgettable experience! This would not have been possible without the fantastic help of Maryanne who booked us in for the tour. She went above and beyond to help us find somewhere to leave our bags during our tour and we wouldn’t have been able to go without her help. We enjoyed the experience so much and we are very grateful to Maryanne for her help and her exceptional customer service! I would definitely recommend booking local for these kind of experiences because that kind of customer care just doesn’t come when you book through third party sites. 10/10 experience ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In June I came to Cairns on holiday from the UK. It was the biggest holiday I've ever taken and because my health limits what I can do took a lot of planning. Maryanne at Cairns Discovery Tours was brilliant. She helped me choose suitable trips, gave me additional information so I could be prepared, advised on the easiest way to get to the departure point for those trips that don't pick up from my accommodation, etc. I booked all my trips except one with Maryanne. Her knowledge of Cairns was invaluable to me. She spoke to me on Whatsapp to answer my questions (we had to arrange call in advance because of the time difference) and when it occurred to me quite close to departure date that I'd need a way of protecting my head and neck from the sun when snorkelling Maryanne got me a suitable headscarf and dropped it off at my accommodation ahead of my arrival. When a friend decided to join me on some of the trips Maryanne was really helpful to her as well. If I am able to come back to Cairns I'll book as much as I can with Maryanne and Cairns Discovery Tours. The service couldn't be bettered.

We have just done the 3 day/2 night Cooktown and Cape Tribulation Tour with 2 friends. An unbelievable experience due to our fantastic guide Steve, who had so much local knowledge on everywhere we visited, especially historical info on the Palmer River gold rush in the 1800s, and Daintree Rainforest botany. Steve was such a good raconteur with friendly personality, who went out of his way to make our trip so enjoyable. Accomodation at both Cooktown and Cape Tribulation was excellent, with amazing setting of the cabins at Cape Tribulation in the rainforest right by the beach. Everything advertised for the tour and more was an memorable experience. Thank you so much Steve!

I was delighted with the Kuranda tour arranged by this company. The timings worked excellently and it was an eminently well organised tour. The train trip up to Kuranda was great fun and fascinating. Personally, I was particularly interested in the engineering. We had an hour in Kuranda Village, which was enough for me, although I expect some people would have liked to have seen the village and visited the butterfly world, which I think would have been tight. Rainforestation was great, plenty of activity of a variety of natures. I could not throw a boomerang to save my life, but it was fun to try. Then the bus down to Cairns was efficient and friendly, with a superb guide.
