How to get to Green Island from Cairns

Green Island sits just 27 kilometres off the Cairns coastline – close enough that you can see the mainland from the beach, yet far enough out that the water shifts to that clear reef blue during the crossing. Getting there is one of the easiest parts of any Cairns holiday, […]

Four divers in scuba gear swimming together during an intro dive underwater

Introductory diving Great Barrier Reef: everything you need to know

Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef is one thing. Dropping below the surface on scuba – leaving the world above behind and breathing through a regulator while coral formations rise around you – is something else entirely. An introductory dive, sometimes called a resort dive or discover scuba dive, lets you […]

Colorful coral reef ecosystem at the Great Barrier Reef with diverse marine life

Great Barrier Reef conservation and protection: how to visit responsibly

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system, a World Heritage-listed ecosystem, and one of the most closely studied marine environments on the planet. It’s also under real pressure – from warming oceans, bleaching events, and a range of threats that don’t pause between tourist seasons. Anyone […]

How to take photos underwater Great Barrier Reef

You’ve planned the trip, booked the tour, and found yourself floating above a coral formation with a turtle drifting past two metres below – and the photo you take looks grey, blurry, and nothing like what your eyes just saw. The Great Barrier Reef is visually extraordinary, but underwater photography […]

Scuba divers swimming with fish at the Great Barrier Reef in clear blue water

Great Barrier Reef marine life guide

Put your face in the water at the right outer reef site on a clear Cairns morning, and the first thing that hits you is the scale of it. The Great Barrier Reef is home to more than 1,600 species of fish, 600 types of coral, six of the world’s […]

Two snorkelers smiling and swimming above colorful coral with fins and masks

What to expect on a Great Barrier Reef tour from Cairns

Most people spend weeks or months looking forward to their reef day. Then the morning arrives, and somewhere between packing the bag and finding the dock, the questions start. How long is the boat ride? What do they actually do when they get there? Is lunch included? What if the […]

Great Barrier Reef safety tipsΒ Β

Most people spend months looking forward to their reef day – and then spend the actual morning in a mild panic, wondering whether they’ve forgotten something important. The good news is that reef tours from Cairns are genuinely well-run, the crew are experienced, and the Great Barrier Reef is far […]

Aerial view of Great Barrier Reef with tour boat and coral formations in clear water

First-time Great Barrier Reef visitor guide

There’s a moment – usually about thirty seconds after you put your face in the water – when it hits you. The coral is right there. Not in a documentary, not behind glass. Just there, in every colour, with fish weaving through it like they have no idea you’re watching. […]

Split view of snorkelling and scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef with tour boat above

Great Barrier Reef snorkelling vs divingΒ

You’re on the boat, the water is that ridiculous shade of blue you only see in photos, and someone hands you a mask. Now comes the question most first-timers wrestle with – do you float along the surface and snorkel, or strap on a tank and drop below? It’s one […]

Snorkelling gear including fins and mask for a Great Barrier Reef tour packing list

What to pack for a Great Barrier Reef tour

Packing for a Great Barrier Reef tour is one of those things that takes ten minutes to get right and costs you a whole day if you don’t. There’s a particular kind of regret that hits when you’re an hour offshore and realise you’ve left the reef-safe sunscreen at the […]

Snorkelers exploring the Great Barrier Reef near a tour boat in clear blue water off Cairns

How much does a Great Barrier Reef tour cost?

Great Barrier Reef tour prices from Cairns can range from a relatively modest island day trip to a premium outer reef experience with diving and a scenic helicopter flight. That’s a wide range, and working out where your trip sits – and whether it’s worth spending more – is exactly […]

James Cook Museum Cooktown: history, artifacts & visitor guide

There is a nineteenth-century convent building on the corner of Helen and Furneaux Streets in Cooktown that stops most visitors in their tracks. Wide verandahs, aged brick, shaded gardens running down toward the Endeavour River. It does not announce itself the way a big-city museum might. It just sits there, […]

Cooktown tour: 1 day or 3 day – which is right for you?

One of the most common questions when planning a Cooktown trip is whether a one day or three day tour is the right call. It is a fair question – the town is far enough from Cairns that the trip demands real commitment either way, and you want to get […]

Large dark boulders sit in the foreground with a steep hill covered in black rocks rising behind them, surrounded by patches of green vegetation under a partly cloudy sky.

Black Mountain Cooktown QLD: a geological wonder explained

Most of the landscape between Cairns and Cooktown is green – dense rainforest on the coastal route, open savannah on the inland highway. So when Black Mountain appears on the horizon, rising starkly from the surrounding scrub, it stops you cold. There is nothing gradual about it. One moment you […]

Grassy Hill Lookout Cooktown: views, history & what to expect

Things to do in Cooktown – a guide to the top attractions

Cooktown sits at the end of the road in more ways than one. It is the last sizeable town before the Cape York Peninsula stretches north toward the tip of Australia, and it carries a sense of being apart from the rest of the world in a way that is […]

A winding coastal road runs along a steep, forested hillside beside bright blue ocean water, with a vehicle driving along the shoreline route

Cairns to Cooktown: how to get there

Cooktown is the kind of place that stops you mid-sentence. You turn a corner onto the main street, the Endeavour River opens up ahead of you, Grassy Hill rises behind the town, and suddenly the distance from Cairns makes complete sense. English navigator Lieutenant James Cook named that river after […]

What to do on Green Island: activities, snorkeling & best time to visit

Imagine a speck of emerald green dropped into a vast expanse of sapphire blue. We arranged 3 day tours from Cairns with Cairns Discovery tours, one to Fitzroy Island, one to Green Island and one to Kuranda . From the initial telephone contact to the conclusion of the tours, Maryanne was so helpful and professional. Booking and payment was easy, follow up information meant we knew exactly where to meet and what we would expect to see and do, when and where to check in on the day . I can thoroughly recommend booking with Cairns Discovery Tours.

Cairns Discovery Tours were amazing. I had very specific requirements for booking tours, due to the group we were travelling with. They made the process so easy. Their recommendations were spot on and then they took care of all our bookings, including updating me on any "deals" that companies had. If you are travelling to Cairns, I would highly recommend contacting Cairns Discovery Tours to sort your holiday!
I had the pleasure of booking my recent trip through Cairns Discovery Tours in Cairns and I must say it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. From the very beginning, Maryanne and team were extremely easy to work with. Their communication was clear, prompt, and effective, which gave me confidence that everything was being handled smoothly. No matter how many questions we had, they responded with patience and helpful details.Since we were completely new to Cairns, their recommendations were invaluable.Another highlight was the deal they worked out for us. They managed to customize the itinerary in a way that was both budget-friendly and full of experiences.Overall, I highly recommend Cairns Discovery Tours to anyone planning a trip to Cairns. They are professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely care about making your journey memorable. I would definitely choose them again for my future travels. Thanks once again Maryanne and Taam!
