The Great Barrier Reef features the planet's largest coral reef system and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. This sprawling marine habitat comprises more than 900 islands and 2900 individual reefs, constituting one of the most intricate and diverse natural ecosystems on the planet. In fact, in 1981 the Great Barrier Reef was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

From the graceful sea turtles and majestic manta rays to myriads of tropical fish, the Reef is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The Great Barrier Reef is home to six of the seven turtle species: loggerhead, green, hawksbill, leatherback, olive ridley and flatback turtles. It is also home to 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish, 4,000 species of mollusc, 133 species of sharks and rays and 30 species of whales and dolphins.

You can’t visit the Great Barrier Reef without going scuba diving or snorkelling. There’s something magical about hearing the gentle clicking and movement of marine life underwater and watching the dazzling array of fish life dart around stunning forests of coral. The Reef also has some of the best diving spots in the world, including the SS Yongala, which is considered one of the top five scuba dive sites in the world and Cod Hole home to thousands of enormous tame potato cods.

Cairns is uniquely positioned as the primary access point to the Great Barrier Reef. Unlike other locations, the reef is relatively close to the mainland here, allowing for shorter travel times.
