Best Family-Friendly Tours Cairns: Fun for Every Age

Family with two kids snorkelling in clear turquoise water on a family-friendly reef tour from Cairns

Planning tours in Cairns with kids is easier than you might expect – but choosing the right tour for your family’s ages and swimming abilities is the thing that makes the difference between a great day and a frustrating one. This guide breaks down the best family-friendly tours in Cairns, what each involves, who it suits, and the age ranges to know before you book.

Key Things to Know Before You Book

  • Ages and minimums matter: Reef tours welcome everyone from infants to teenagers, Swimming ability varies: Some tours work perfectly for non-swimmers with glass-bottom boats and enclosed pools. Others suit confident swimmers wanting to snorkel
  • Duration affects who enjoys it: Full-day pontoon tours (8+ hours) work for older kids. Shorter island trips (2-4 hours) suit toddlers who nap or get restless
  • Matching interests wins: Reef, rainforest, wildlife, trains, water slides – Cairns caters to all of it. Pick the experience that genuinely excites your kids
  • Season and motion sickness: Outer reef is 45-90 minutes offshore. If kids get motion sick, choose Green Island, Fitzroy Island or Frankland Island  (45 minutes)
  • Book early: Peak school holidays (June-July, September-October) fill fast. A few weeks ahead is recommended

Deciding what your children want to experience

Before diving into specific tours, think about what matters most to your family.

Can they swim, or are they confident in the water?

Reef tours are set up for all ability levels, including non-swimmers, but knowing your kids’ confidence helps narrow the choice. Non-swimmers do brilliantly on glass-bottom boat tours and enclosed ocean pools. Confident swimmers love snorkelling.

How long can they handle a day out?

A full-day pontoon tour (8+ hours including travel) works well for older kids who can engage with activities throughout. For toddlers and very young children, a shorter, more flexible option like Green Island gives you more control over the day.

What are they genuinely excited about?

Wildlife, water, boats, trains, animals – Cairns caters to all of it. Matching the tour to what genuinely excites your kids makes a big difference to everyone’s experience. When your kids enjoy, you do too!

Reef tours for families

Moore Reef Pontoon (Sunlover Cruises) – best all-round reef day for families

Best for: Families with children aged 4 and up, all swimming abilities
Duration: Full day (departs 10:15 am, returns 5:30 pm)
This is the most popular reef tour for families visiting Cairns, and for good reason. The Moore Reef Pontoon is a multi-level, interactive floating platform complete with a supersized sundeck and the only theme park-style spaghetti waterslide on the Great Barrier Reef, along with a fully enclosed children’s pool to keep little ones safe.

The tour is all-inclusive: snorkelling gear and lycra suit, glass-bottom boat, semi-submersible, underwater observatory, 30-metre waterslide, enclosed kids’ ocean pool, tropical buffet lunch, plus morning and afternoon tea. Children aged 4 and over are welcome.

What makes this tour particularly good for families is that it genuinely works for everyone. Lifeguards are on duty all day, the enclosed ocean pool suits younger kids, and the glass-bottom boat, semi-submersible, and underwater observatory are all included for non-swimmers. Meanwhile, confident swimmers and older kids can snorkel the reef, and teenagers can add Seawalker helmet diving.

Moore Reef + Fitzroy Island combo – best for variety seekers

Best for: Families who want a reef and an island in one day
Duration: Full day

The Moore Reef and Fitzroy Island combo offers 2.5 hours at the Moore Reef Pontoon on the Outer Barrier Reef – with all the pontoon’s standard inclusions including the waterslide, semi-submersible, glass-bottom boat, and underwater observatory – followed by 2.5 hours at Fitzroy Island for lunch and relaxation.

Fitzroy Island is a local favourite just 45 minutes from Cairns, with 99% of the island covered in lush rainforest, fringed by coral beaches and calm turquoise bays. The afternoon includes a premium tropical buffet lunch with beachfront views.

This is a great option for families who want to tick both the reef and island experiences in a single day. It’s a longer, more active day – better suited to children aged 6 and up who’ll be engaged throughout rather than toddlers who may find the pace tiring.

Book the Moore Reef & Fitzroy Island

Green Island – best for young families and toddlers

Best for: Toddlers, young children, families wanting flexibility
Duration: Half-day or full-day options available

A Green Island day trip is one of the easiest and most family-friendly ways to see the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns. The island offers calm beaches, snorkelling, glass-bottom boat tours, rainforest walks, and handy resort facilities – perfect with kids in tow.

Green Island is very family-friendly with half and full-day tours available. Kids will enjoy playing on the beach, snorkelling and swimming in the sheltered warm waters, or exploring the island on rainforest boardwalks. The glass-bottom boat option means even very young children can see the reef without getting in the water.

Tourists viewing the Great Barrier Reef through the glass bottom of a boat on a Green Island tour from Cairns

Green Island is the most pram-friendly reef destination, due to its rainforest boardwalks and decks. Most Cairns family reef tour operators allow fold-up prams on board. This matters more than most guides mention: if you’re travelling with a toddler who still naps, Green Island’s layout allows you to step away from the water, take a shaded rainforest walk, and give your child time to rest in a way that a pontoon trip simply doesn’t accommodate.

Green Island is the right call for families with children under 5, or for parents who want the freedom to pace the day around their kids rather than around a tour schedule.

Book a Green Island day trip

Fitzroy Island – best for active families and older kids

Best for: Families with children aged 6 and up who enjoy snorkelling and exploring
Duration: Up to 6 hours island time (multiple departure options)

Fitzroy Island has a campground and resort. Kids will love jumping on the ocean trampoline, exploring the island’s mountain and rainforest walks, and snorkelling the reef. Optional extras include a guided sea kayaking tour.

Fitzroy is wilder and less manicured than Green Island – the snorkelling is right off the beach, the walks are more adventurous, and the island feels less like a resort destination. For families who love getting in the water and exploring, it’s an excellent choice. It’s also just 45 minutes from Cairns, making the crossing quick and manageable even for kids who get motion sick on boats.

Rainforest tours for families

Kuranda via Skyrail and Scenic Railway – best family rainforest day

Best for: All ages, including toddlers
Duration: Full day
Age minimum: No minimum (child pricing for ages 4-14)

This is the classic Cairns family day trip, and it earns that status. The combination of the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway (going up) and the Kuranda Scenic Railway (coming down, or vice versa) means you see the rainforest two completely different ways in one day – and both are genuinely extraordinary experiences for children.

The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway spans 7.5 kilometres over Australia’s pristine tropical rainforests. You glide just metres above the rainforest canopy before descending through the canopy layers and deep into the heart of the forest at Skyrail’s two rainforest mid-stations for the ultimate tropical rainforest experience.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway winds through tunnels and across bridges with views that genuinely impress even well-travelled kids. In Kuranda itself, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary (the largest in the Southern Hemisphere), Birdworld, and the Koala Gardens all make for an excellent few hours in the village

Family package pricing includes child pricing for ages 4-14, while children under 4 travel free.

Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures – best wildlife day for families

Best for: All ages (children under 4 free)
Duration: Half day or full day
Distance from Cairns: 40 minutes north (25 minutes from Palm Cove)

Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures is a family-friendly wildlife park with croc shows and a full daily schedule of presentations. Even a toddler will be fascinated – especially on the lagoon boat cruise where crocodiles launch out of the water at feeding time.

The daily programme runs from 9 am to 4:30 pm and includes a Crocodile Farm Tour, Cassowary Feeding, Snake Show, Crocodile Feeding, Crocodile Attack Show, and Koala Talk. Beyond the crocs, you can meet the elusive cassowary and enjoy encounters with koalas, kangaroos, wombats, emus, snakes, and lizards.

Admission is $107 per adult, and kids under 4 get in free. Here’s the useful bit: your ticket works for three consecutive days, so if you’re staying nearby, you can come back and catch the shows you missed the first time around – no need to rush through everything in one day. Hotel pickups from Cairns and Palm Cove are available when you book – the Cairns Discovery Tours team can help arrange these as part of your visit.

Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation – best for older families

Best for: Families with children aged 5 and up who enjoy nature and wildlife
Duration: Full day
Note: Booster seats available on request for children 4-7 years

The Daintree Rainforest is one of the world’s oldest rainforests and the only place on Earth where two UNESCO World Heritage Areas – rainforest and reef – meet. A guided full-day tour from Cairns typically includes a Daintree River cruise to spot crocodiles and birdlife, guided rainforest walks, Cape Tribulation Beach, and lunch.

Tour operators will provide booster seats – advise at the time of booking for all children up to age 7. The day is long (typically 10-11 hours from Cairns with transfers) and involves some walking, so it’s best suited to children who are reliably good in the car and on their feet. For the right family, it’s exceptional – the rainforest at Cape Tribulation is unlike anything most children have seen before.

Hot air ballooning – a surprise hit with kids

Best for: Children aged 4 and up
Duration: Approximately 5 hours including transfers (60-minute flight)

Hot air ballooning over the Atherton Tablelands is not a tour most families think of first – but it consistently surprises parents with how well children respond to it. The pre-dawn pickup, the balloon inflation at first light, and the silent drift above farmland while kangaroos graze below is a genuinely magical experience for kids.

Children aged 3 -18 must be accompanied by an adult. There are no strict weight restrictions, but those over 100 kilograms should advise the operator at booking. All participants must be able to climb the 1.2-metre foothold ladder into the basket and stand for the duration of the flight.

The basket is stable and waist-high, and the flight itself (39-65 minutes) is gentle and smooth. It’s back in Cairns before 9:30 am, leaving the rest of the day completely free.

Water sports for teenagers

White water rafting on the Barron River (minimum age 12 years) and Tully River (minimum age 13 years) offers exciting half-day adventures for older kids and teenagers. These are great for families with active teens looking for an adrenaline rush within the Cairns region.

Quick reference: family tours by age and type

Cairns offers family tours across all age ranges and interests. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you match the right experience to your family’s ages and preferences. Each tour has different strengths – some suit toddlers, others work best for active older kids or teenagers – and many cater to the whole family at once with different activity options for different ages.

Practical tips for booking family tours

Book in advance: Peak school holiday periods (June-July, September-October) fill fast, especially on reef tours. Booking at least a few weeks ahead is strongly recommended.

Ask about family pricing: Most operators offer family packages for 2 adults + 2 children that represent meaningful savings over individual ticket pricing. Always check when booking.

Consider motion sickness: The outer reef is 45-90 minutes offshore depending on the tour. If your children are prone to motion sickness, Green Island (shortest crossing) or Fitzroy Island (45 minutes) are better choices than the full-day outer reef pontoon. Medication is available onboard most vessels.

Stinger suits for kids: During stinger season (November to April), stinger suits are strongly recommended for children snorkelling at the reef. Most tour operators provide or hire them.

Prams and carriers: Most catamaran operators accommodate fold-up prams, though space is limited onboard and on the pontoon. Baby carriers are encouraged where possible. Green Island is the most pram-accessible reef destination.

Reef-safe sunscreen: Bring your own mineral-based, reef-safe sunscreen for all reef tours. Most operators now require it and some sell it onboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my kids get motion sickness?

Choose tours with the shortest boat crossings. Green Island (shortest) or Fitzroy Island (45 minutes) are better than full-day outer reef trips (45-90 minutes). Medication is available onboard most vessels – ask when booking.

Do I need to book tours in advance for families?

Yes, especially during school holidays. Book at least a few weeks ahead for peak times (June-July, September-October). Off-peak periods offer more flexibility.

Are stinger suits required for kids?

During stinger season (November to April), they’re strongly recommended even when swimming in stinger nets. Tour operators provide or hire them – confirm at booking.

Can non-swimmers do reef tours?

Absolutely. Glass-bottom boats, semi-submersibles, and underwater observatories are included on family reef tours. Non-swimmers see the reef without getting in the water.

What’s the best tour for active kids?

Frankland Island, Moore Reef Pontoon (waterslide, pool, all-day activities), Fitzroy Island (ocean trampoline, snorkelling, hiking), and white water rafting (Barron or Tully rivers for 12+) all suit active kids.

We had such a fun time on a half day tour of Fitzroy island with Cairns Discovery Tours! We managed to do an everything we wanted (Nudey beach, long snorkel and lunch) within the time period we had and we even got to swim with turtles 🐢 an unforgettable experience! This would not have been possible without the fantastic help of Maryanne who booked us in for the tour. She went above and beyond to help us find somewhere to leave our bags during our tour and we wouldn’t have been able to go without her help. We enjoyed the experience so much and we are very grateful to Maryanne for her help and her exceptional customer service! I would definitely recommend booking local for these kind of experiences because that kind of customer care just doesn’t come when you book through third party sites. 10/10 experience ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In June I came to Cairns on holiday from the UK. It was the biggest holiday I've ever taken and because my health limits what I can do took a lot of planning. Maryanne at Cairns Discovery Tours was brilliant. She helped me choose suitable trips, gave me additional information so I could be prepared, advised on the easiest way to get to the departure point for those trips that don't pick up from my accommodation, etc. I booked all my trips except one with Maryanne. Her knowledge of Cairns was invaluable to me. She spoke to me on Whatsapp to answer my questions (we had to arrange call in advance because of the time difference) and when it occurred to me quite close to departure date that I'd need a way of protecting my head and neck from the sun when snorkelling Maryanne got me a suitable headscarf and dropped it off at my accommodation ahead of my arrival. When a friend decided to join me on some of the trips Maryanne was really helpful to her as well. If I am able to come back to Cairns I'll book as much as I can with Maryanne and Cairns Discovery Tours. The service couldn't be bettered.

We have just done the 3 day/2 night Cooktown and Cape Tribulation Tour with 2 friends. An unbelievable experience due to our fantastic guide Steve, who had so much local knowledge on everywhere we visited, especially historical info on the Palmer River gold rush in the 1800s, and Daintree Rainforest botany. Steve was such a good raconteur with friendly personality, who went out of his way to make our trip so enjoyable. Accomodation at both Cooktown and Cape Tribulation was excellent, with amazing setting of the cabins at Cape Tribulation in the rainforest right by the beach. Everything advertised for the tour and more was an memorable experience. Thank you so much Steve!

I was delighted with the Kuranda tour arranged by this company. The timings worked excellently and it was an eminently well organised tour. The train trip up to Kuranda was great fun and fascinating. Personally, I was particularly interested in the engineering. We had an hour in Kuranda Village, which was enough for me, although I expect some people would have liked to have seen the village and visited the butterfly world, which I think would have been tight. Rainforestation was great, plenty of activity of a variety of natures. I could not throw a boomerang to save my life, but it was fun to try. Then the bus down to Cairns was efficient and friendly, with a superb guide.
