If you’re spending any time in Cairns, you’ll end up on the Esplanade. It’s that kind of place – somewhere you walk through once and keep coming back to.
Stretching 2.5 kilometres along the city’s waterfront foreshore and overlooking Trinity Inlet and the Coral Sea, it’s the beating heart of Cairns and one of the best free attractions in tropical Australia. Everything here costs nothing. The lagoon, the boardwalk, the BBQs, the playgrounds, the outdoor gym, the skate plaza – all of it open to anyone, all day.
For visitors, it’s both a welcome antidote to a packed touring schedule and a genuinely enjoyable destination in its own right. For locals, it’s just Tuesday.

The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon
Let’s get the big question out of the way first: No, you can’t swim in the ocean at Cairns. The foreshore fronts the mudflats and mangroves of Trinity Inlet – beautiful in their own right, and an important habitat for birdlife and juvenile marine species – but not a swimming beach. The lagoon is the answer to that, and it’s a very good one.
This 4,800-square-metre saltwater swimming pool sits right on the waterfront, pumping filtered and chlorinated water from Trinity Inlet through a state-of-the-art system. Think of it as the ocean’s better-behaved sibling – all the ambience, none of the marine stingers or crocodiles.
It’s lifeguard-patrolled, immaculately maintained, and surrounded by timber sun decks, grassy parklands, and shade trees that make it easy to spend half a day here without planning to. The pool has deeper sections for confident swimmers and shallow areas with sandy edges for young children. Freshwater showers, change rooms, and lockers are all on site.
Opening hours: 6 am–6 pm Thursday to Tuesday; 12 pm–6 pm on Wednesdays (closed Wednesday mornings for cleaning and maintenance).
Cost: Completely free. Lifeguards on duty at all times during opening hours.
Practical tip: The lagoon is busiest in the afternoon, particularly in peak season (June–August). If you want the pool mostly to yourself, an early morning swim before 8 am is genuinely magical – calm water, golden light, and the inlet stirring to life behind you.
The boardwalk
The Esplanade boardwalk runs 2.5 kilometres along the foreshore – wide, mostly flat, largely shaded, and car-free for most of its length. It connects the Cairns Marlin Marina at its southern end (where reef and island tours depart) northward through the lagoon precinct, past the playgrounds, and up to the mangroves and Coconut Grove at the northern end.
It’s popular with joggers and cyclists in the early morning, families throughout the day, and everyone at sunset. The walking surface is well maintained, accessible for wheelchairs and prams, and lined with public artworks, exercise stations, and enough seating to stop whenever the mood takes you.
Coconut Grove, near the northern end, is one of the most photographed spots on the Esplanade – a stretch framed by tall palms that creates a classic tropical corridor, especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Worth making the walk for.
The boardwalk also offers a view you won’t get anywhere else in Cairns: the mudflats at low tide are alive with birds – herons, egrets, ibis, and during migration season, a remarkable variety of wading shorebirds that travel here from as far away as Siberia. It’s an unexpectedly absorbing spectacle if you happen to be there at the right time.
Free BBQ facilities
Free BBQ facilities are dotted along the Esplanade parklands, cleaned daily and available from 6 am to 9 pm. Picnic tables sit beneath the Banyan trees throughout the parklands – enormous old trees that provide real shade and a genuinely atmospheric setting for a meal.
This is enormously popular with locals and budget-conscious visitors alike. Pick up supplies from Rusty’s Markets (more on that shortly), fire up the BBQ, and eat lunch under a centuries-old fig tree while the inlet does its thing in the background. It costs almost nothing and it’s one of the better ways to spend a Cairns afternoon.
Playgrounds and family attractions
The Esplanade has three playgrounds – all free, all within easy reach of each other, and genuinely well designed rather than the park-bench-and-rusty-slide variety.
Muddy’s Playground is the centrepiece family area. Named after the inlet’s famous mudflats (a beloved local reference), it features water play, multiple climbing structures, and a café nearby. It reliably becomes a full afternoon out for families with young children – bring a change of clothes for the little ones.
The Skate Plaza is an award-winning facility that draws a dedicated crowd of skateboarders, BMX riders, and scooter enthusiasts of all skill levels. Even if your family doesn’t skate, it’s an entertaining place to watch from the bleachers.
The Funship Playground at the northern end is built around a pirate ship theme – reliably exciting for younger children and very photogenic.
Beyond the playgrounds, the Esplanade has beach volleyball courts and a series of outdoor fitness stations spread along the boardwalk. The fitness stations are genuinely well-equipped – pull-up bars, balance equipment, resistance stations – and used by locals as a proper outdoor gym at all hours of the day.
Markets
The Esplanade and surrounding streets host three distinct markets, each with its own character and schedule. If you’re visiting Cairns on a weekend, at least one of these is worth building into your plans.
Esplanade Market runs every Saturday from 8 am to around 4 pm, showcasing local artisans – contemporary jewellery, woodcraft, leather goods, pottery, skincare, and more. It’s a genuinely locally produced market rather than a generic tourist souvenir run, which makes it worth a browse if you’re in town on a Saturday.
Cairns Night Markets sit right on the Esplanade and open every evening from 5 pm to 11 pm, seven days a week. Over 70 stalls cover jewellery, souvenirs, clothing, crafts, food, and massage services. The food hall is a good option for a casual dinner – a range of Asian and international options at reasonable prices.
Rusty’s Markets on Grafton Street – a short walk from the Esplanade – is the most celebrated local market in Cairns and operates Friday through Sunday from early morning. Exotic tropical fruit (dragonfruit, mangosteens, rambutan), local produce, street food, and a bustling community atmosphere make it one of the best free experiences in the city. If you’re visiting Cairns on a weekend, Rusty’s is essential.
Dining along the Esplanade
The stretch of restaurants, cafés, and bars lining the Esplanade is one of the better dining precincts in Far North Queensland. It genuinely covers the full range – from a quick breakfast coffee with an inlet view to a proper evening meal with a wine list worth taking seriously.
For breakfast: Esplanade cafés open early, and a morning coffee at a waterfront table before heading out on a Great Barrier Reef tour or Daintree Rainforest adventure is a lovely way to start the day.
For casual dining: The precinct is well stocked with casual options – pub fare, Asian cuisine, and international restaurants at reasonable prices. Boardwalk Social by Crystalbrook is a popular spot for its good food, relaxed atmosphere, and live music.
For a proper evening out: Several well-regarded restaurants line the waterfront with outdoor tables overlooking the inlet. The dining here has improved significantly in recent years and is genuinely worth planning around.
Dinner and sunset cruises
For something memorable on the water, both of these experiences depart from the nearby Cairns Marlin Marina and give you the Esplanade from a completely different vantage point – watching the city’s lights come on across the inlet as the sky changes colour is one of Cairns’ quietly spectacular moments.
The Cairns Sunset River Cruise ($85 adult, $55 child 2-11 years) departs at 5:15 pm for a 90-minute cruise through Trinity Inlet – a complimentary drink in hand, maximum 16 passengers, and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that’s hard to find anywhere else in the city.
The Cairns Dinner Cruise ($145 adult, $115 child 4-14 years) takes it a step further with a full buffet dinner aboard the Spirit of Cairns, a 26-metre sailing catamaran. Live music runs Sunday through Thursday, the buffet features fresh local seafood, and the cruise takes you into the winding interior of Trinity Inlet before returning along the twinkling Cairns waterfront. It’s a highlight for couples, families celebrating something, and anyone who wants a genuinely memorable Cairns evening.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t you swim in the ocean at Cairns?
The Cairns waterfront faces Trinity Inlet, which is tidal mudflat and mangrove habitat rather than a sandy swimming beach. The inlet is also home to saltwater crocodiles.
The lagoon was built specifically to give Cairns a safe, year-round swimming option, and it does the job brilliantly. For ocean swimming, the Northern Beaches – Trinity Beach, Palm Cove, and Ellis Beach – are 20-35 minutes north and well worth a day trip.
Is the lagoon safe from marine stingers?
Yes. The lagoon is a closed, filtered system – no marine life enters it. It’s completely safe year-round, including during stinger season (November to May when box jellyfish are present in coastal waters). Lifeguards patrol during all open hours.
What time does the Esplanade get busy?
Early morning (before 8 am) is quiet and popular with locals for exercise. Midday through to late afternoon is peak lagoon time, particularly on weekends and during school holidays. The dining precinct picks up from around 5 pm, especially when the Night Markets open.
Is there anything to do at the Esplanade in the evening?
Plenty. The Night Markets open at 5 pm every day. The dining precinct is at its most atmospheric after dark. The sunset cruise departs at 5:15 pm. And the boardwalk itself – lit at night, with the city reflected on the inlet – is a perfectly good place for a post-dinner stroll.
